How Can You Avoid Inferior Thyroid Supplements
And Choose One That Will Actually Work?
"Not All Thyroid Supplements Are Created Equal."
Before you buy a thyroid support formula, it's important you know what you're buying. Fly-by-night supplement makers are rushing to create their own version of a natural thyroid supplement and "cash-in" on the new phenomenon of treating the symptoms of thyroid problems naturally.
Beware, many of the supplements out there claim to have the best product, but most of them either don't have enough key natural ingredients to be effective or use poor quality synthetic versions. And more importantly, most supplements do not use the proper dose found beneficial in clinical studies.
Effective results with thyroid supplements are mainly dependent on the quality of the formula you buy*. So before you purchase, make sure the thyroid supplement you choose meets all the top criteria.
Why Are Natural Thyroid Supplements The Most Popular Approach Today?

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck. It is one of the largest endocrine glands and it produces hormones that greatly influence every function in the body. The two major hormones that the thyroid produces interact with all our other hormones such as insulin, cortisol, and the sex hormones (estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone) to keep the body functioning as it should.
When your thyroid levels are out of balance, so are you. The fact that the thyroid is in constant interaction and communication with the other hormones in the body explains why a thyroid that is not functioning at its best can result in so many symptoms and diseases. A poor functioning thyroid will have a negative impact on the body's metabolic rate, heart and digestive function, muscle control, brain development, and bone maintenance. An estimated 10% to 40% of Americans have poor functioning thyroids, which makes it a common health concern. The three most common forms of thyroid problems include hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), and goiter (an enlarged thyroid).
As the thyroid controls so many of our bodily processes, it is important to make sure that it is functioning at its best. Today, there are many natural products available to help ensure that the thyroid gets the nutrients it needs to function at its best. Studies have demonstrated that various natural ingredients and nutrients, such as Iodine, play an important role in optimal thyroid health. All You Need To Know About Thyroid Health
And How To Treat Challenging Symptoms
OK, first things first - it's important to understand what the thyroid gland is and what you can do to ensure that you maintain optimal thyroid health.
The thyroid is one of the largest endocrine glands in the body, but it is still small in size, no bigger than your thumb. It is situated in the neck between your voice box and your collarbone. It produces hormones that regulate your metabolism, as well as affect how fast your brain, liver, heart and other organs work.
The thyroid produces two main hormones that control your bodily processes. These hormones are called triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). These hormones are made from Iodine so too much or too little Iodine in your diet can have serious consequences on your thyroid health. When the thyroid produces too little of the thyroid hormones, it is called hypothyroidism and this is often linked to an Iodine deficiency. When the thyroid produces too much of the thyroid hormones, it is called hyperthyroidism.
Many people are not aware of the issue until they are experiencing severe symptoms because they are not familiar with the typical symptoms of thyroid issues. Being proactive about noticing the early signs of thyroid problems is of the utmost importance. As clinical studies suggest, early detection and treatment will ensure that thyroid levels are kept in check - so don't ignore the symptoms.
What Are The Symptoms Of An Unhealthy Thyroid?
Women are five to eight times more likely to have thyroid problems than men. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can be challenging to detect because they produce symptoms that may be vague or similar to other ailments.
The thyroid gland plays an important role in all bodily processes and so it affects our general health and well-being. If it is not functioning at its best, we won't be feeling our best. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include forgetfulness, dry skin and hair, feeling rundown, unexplained weight gain, sensitive to cold, irregular menstrual cycles, and hair loss. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include irritability, increased sweating, difficulty sleeping, fast heartbeat, weight loss, less frequent periods, and shaky hands.
Which Are The Necessary Tests For Diagnosis?
There are various blood tests that can be done in order to diagnose hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Not every test is needed, it all depends on the person and the symptoms they present.
If symptoms present themselves, it is important that you visit your doctor as soon as possible as early intervention can assist in treating the issue more effectively.
Here, we list some of the common blood tests that doctors rely upon in order to diagnose correctly:
- ●TSH Test - The most common initial way to test thyroid function is to measure TSH levels in the blood. TSH is a hormone released by the pituitary gland in the brain in response to the amount of T4 released by the thyroid. If blood tests show high levels of TSH, it could indicate hypothyroidism while low levels may indicate hyperthyroidism.
- ●T4 Test - The T4 hormone exists as two forms in the body, as T4 bonded to proteins in the blood and as free T4 which hasn't bonded to proteins. Most of the T4 in the bloodstream is bonded to proteins and don't enter the various tissues that need the thyroid hormones. Free T4 is what is available for the body to use so it is preferred to test levels of this type of T4 hormone in the blood (called a free T4 test). A doctor may order a T4 test if a TSH test came back with abnormal results.
- ●T3 Test - The T3 hormone works in the same way as the T4 hormone, with most being bonded to proteins in the blood. Testing levels of the T3 hormone in the blood is more useful for determining hyperthyroidism.
- ●Thyroid Antibody Tests - The immune system produces antibodies which protects the body against bacteria and viruses. The two common antibodies that cause thyroid problems are thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin. Measuring levels of these in the blood, (TPO and TgAp test), will determine if the cause of the thyroid problem is an autoimmune disease such as Graves' disease or Hashimoto's disease.
No single test will give your doctor definitive answers about exactly what is wrong as the thryoid is a complicated gland. However, abnormal results can help point them in the right direction and appropriate treatment.
What's The Science Behind Thyroid Supplements?
And Do They Really Work?
Natural dietary thyroid supplements are generally safe to take and are being favored more and more over prescription medication, which can often leave nasty side effects in its tracks. Specific key ingredients have been shown to help reduce the effects of an unhealthy thyroid and hypothyroidism.
The problem is when manufacturers don't pay attention to the research and produce ineffective formulas that simply will not get the results you are looking for. Always check the label and look for pure, natural ingredients backed by clinical studies and research. Synthetically grown ingredients in a lab and low amounts of key natural ingredients in a product will essentially make a thyroid supplement ineffective.
Key ingredients that have been identified as being helpful in the treatment of thyroid issues include Iodine, Kelp, Selenium, L-Tyrosine, and Ashwagandha Root to name but a few. Research has shown that Iodine is essential for the healthy production of the thyroid hormones. An Iodine deficiency may lead to hypothyroidism or a thyroid goiter.
However, too much Iodine can also cause problems, so research has shown that Selenium is essential to prevent Iodine toxicity. Details about these and other ingredients can be found on our clinical study page.
The use of natural herbal supplements is an excellent long-term solution to ensure optimal thyroid health and support. But make sure you only buy a premium thyroid supplement that will actually help and not just some powder in a pill.*
Studies: Natural Thyroid Healthcare
Summary Of The Clinical Studies And Research
After thyroid health and natural treatments were discussed on TV by the world's most famous doctor, the sales of thyroid supplements went through the roof. To be clear, he does not endorse any specific thyroid supplements or products per se, but he does give some guidelines about natural methods of taking care of thyroid health.
Thyroid issues are not something new and they affect a large percent of the population. The function of the thyroid is to utilize Iodine obtained through food to make thyroid hormones. The thyroid cells are the only cells in the body that can absorb Iodine. As the thyroid is responsible for the functioning of every cell in the body, it is essential that it is working at its best. Many studies have been carried out and published in a range of journals showing the benefits of specific ingredients on thyroid health. By taking a supplement containing key natural, clinically-proven ingredients, it can help improve your thyroid health more effectively and with fewer side effects when compared to other medical treatments available.
Clinical Study: Iodine for Thyroid Health
Research published in the Annals of Pediatric Endocrinology & Metabolism discusses the relationship between Iodine and the functioning of the thyroid gland. As the thyroid hormones are made from Iodine, having a deficiency in Iodine can affect the amount of hormones your thyroid produces. It can also lead to goiter (an enlargement of the thyroid gland).
The body does not make Iodine and so it relies on it to be consumed through the diet. As Iodine is essential for the production of the thyroid hormones which control all bodily processes, as well as growth and normal brain development in children, not consuming enough can be detrimental to your overall health. It can affect your metabolism, heart rate, blood flow, energy production, normal reproductive function, and bone health. There has been comparative research conducted on the populations of South Korea, which is known to be an iodine-sufficient area, and North Korea, which is known to be an Iodine-deficient area.
The Results Of The Clinical Study
Several studies have found the levels of Iodine in the population of South Korea to be more than sufficient. This is due to their high consumption of seaweed. In contrast, however, due to North Korea having a predominantly mountainous terrain, this population is prone to Iodine deficiency. A survey conducted on school children in this region found the rate of goiter to be 19.5%. 2.2% of these were visible goiters. The IQ of children living in Iodine-deficient areas is also found to be, on average, 12 points lower than those living in Iodine-sufficient areas.
In summary, Iodine, as part of the overall spectrum of care which includes natural health supplements that contain clinically proven natural ingredients, may be very effective in achieving good thyroid health.

Magnesium
A deficiency in Magnesium causes a host of different symptoms, but the most common is an impaired functioning thyroid gland. Magnesium is responsible for converting the inactive T4 hormone into the active T3 hormone which is essential for the functioning of the body's cells. A Magnesium deficiency is also linked to goiter.

Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin that is used for the proper formation of red blood cells, neurological function, and DNA synthesis. It cannot be made by the body, so it needs to be consumed through food so deficiencies are very common. Vitamin B12 deficiency has been linked to hypothyroidism.

Selenium
Selenium has antioxidant properties that protect the thyroid gland. It protects against Iodine toxicity which is essential for those who suffer from autoimmune thyroid disorders such as Hashimoto's disease. Selenium has a significant impact on the anti-inflammatory activity of autoimmune diseases of the thyroid which may reduce damage to thyroid tissue.

Copper
Copper works alongside Zinc to help in the production of thyroid hormones. There is a delicate balance between the two when it comes to thyroid health. Copper stimulates the thyroid and also protects the body against too much thyroxine in the blood.

Iodine
The two main thyroid hormones are comprised of Iodine (T4 has 4 Iodine molecules and T3 has 3 Iodine molecules) which makes this the key element that enables the thyroid gland to function. For the thyroid to work at its best, the body needs the correct amount of Iodine. The daily recommended dosage is 150 mcg.

L-Tyrosine
Together with Iodine, L-Tyrosine promotes the production of the thyroid hormones. This is an amino acid that the body makes from another amino acid, phenylalanine. It also plays an essential role in the production of other hormones such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine which affects mood.
